Why should someone pledege into a fraternity or sorority if there is going to be hazing and things like that?

I was reading a Jet magazine one day and they had an article on a group of Kappa Alpha Psi men going to jail for beating someone with a cane because he wanted to pledege and he had to prove that he was man enough. i would like to have some comments from some Kappa men and other sorors and frats on this topic or issue. why will you have me steal bread out of a store to prove that i am worthy enough to be in the fraternity. you want criminals in the fraternity or sorority. why would you do that. i need to have more information. i would like to pledege one day but the way that it is going i think i will take another route.
