How do you "probe" a woman in conversation to see if she has a boyfriend?

Whether meeting someone new at work, in a college cl or at a bar, it can be very hard to know if a woman is single or not. So, what do you say or ask or look for without being obvious about your intentions of wanting to ask her out? I just don't want to look silly because I hit on a woman who is in a relationship. HELP!!!
