Y do we always say i hav A COLD but THE FLU???

i recently recovered from THE flu , and it actually turned into A cold. so, noticing i chaged the artilce i was using, i started to wonder. we find it most common to say A cold but THE flu. is there more than one type of cold or sumthing? is it a common grammatical error? or is ther sum other reason??
